Let's join in the celebration with Japanese carp streamers. The carp is a symbol of determination and vigour, overcoming all obstacles to swim upstream. Clay Creations - Monday 10 July, 10.30am-12 noon 


Create and decorate your own pottery bowl and plate. All pieces will be glazed and fired in a pottery oven to make them strong and food safe so you can eat from them. Investigate patterns and surface detail displayed in The Art of Friendship with fashion designer and textile artist Rebecca Marsden. You will learn how they can be recreated using traditional tie-dying techniques. Explore how this textile art was used in Japan and in contemporary fashion. Unravelling the Knot: Illuminated Knots - Monday 17 July, 10.30am-1pm (12-14 year-olds)

Learn to draw and tie a range of Celtic and Japanese knots with Maker-in-Residence Corinne Okada Takara. In this introductory workshop, participants will discover the importance and symbolism of knot traditions in Japanese and Irish culture. You will then create intricate knot drawings on grid paper and make your own light-up Japanese knot necklace or keychain. Limited to 15 teens per session. Free, booking essential. Bealtaine Festival Workshop: Haiku for Beginners - Wednesday 24 May, 11am - 1:30pm

 

Meet poet Eriko Tsugawa and discover the world of haiku poetry and its master, Matsuo Basho. Participants will explore the 5/7/5 syllable form of haiku and compose poetry based on their own life experiences, with inspiration drawn from prints in the Art of Friendship exhibition. This unique workshop is suitable for beginners. Limited to 15 places. Shibori Textiles Workshop - Sunday 16 July, 12noon - 4pm


Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique, used to produce patterns on fabric. Join fashion designer and textile artist Rebecca Marsden and make a unique, fabric-bound notebook perfect for poems, musings or a gift for a friend. Sumi-e Workshop - Two day worskshop. Saturday 5, 10:30am - 4pm & Sunday 6 August, 12noon - 4pm

 

Sumi-e is a Japanese word for a black ink painting. The artist strives to capture the essence of the subject matter, using the fewest strokes possible. Join us for this two-day workshop with an internationally renowned, traditional Zen arts master, who will introduce the use of the sumi-e brush, its techniques and the basic principles of this art. Please note, we require 7 days' notice of a cancellation; otherwise the full workshop fee must be paid. Credit card details are thus required in order to guarantee your place in the workshop and we will be in touch shortly to request these.

Please be aware that we require a minimum 72 hours' notice of a cancellation if possible. These workshops take time and resources to prepare and we always have an extensive waiting list for each workshop. Therefore if you cannot attend and we do not hear from you we may be unable to reserve a place for your child in future workshops.
