Bealtaine event - Nanas, Papas and Babas

Have fun and enjoy some special time with your grandchild. Taking inspiration from the Chester Beatty Library collections, this event will encourage interaction between nanas, papas and babas through storytelling and gentle movement. Chester Beatty is being commemorated with four new postage stamp designs this year. Learn about the wonderful world of stamps and join us to explore this traditional graphic art where you can make your very own stamp to celebrate someone special to you. Summer Special: Kids Yoga - Magic Carpet Journey - Wednesday 11 July, 11am – 12noon


Hop on your magic carpet and hold on tight as we zoom off to faraway lands. There we will meet Chinese emperors, Japanese samurai and lots of exciting characters from the Chester Beatty Library collections while we weave tales, play and relax together. Join us to travel in time and discover the fascinating drawings, shapes and colours of The Coëtivy Hours. You will learn how to make a screen print and create your own images on paper and fabric. Celebrate National Drawing Day, with a workshop dedicated to drawing. Join illustrator Philip Kennedy as he explores the rich and vibrant work in the Chester Beatty collection and presents some fun, unusual and creative approaches to drawing. This summer, teens are invited to join the Library’s Maker-in-Residence and explore the beautifully decorated medieval manuscript. Help bring the Library to life with our 3D printer and tablets and remix different objects, stories and pictures. Please watch this space for more details from July 1.

Bealtaine Workshop: Exploring Friendship and Love through a Journey of Patterns and Colours - Monday 21 May, 10:30 - 3:30pm

Take an inspiration from The Coëtivy Hours and investigate delicate patterns, shapes and colours through etching and chine-collé with Debora Ando. You will learn a technique as old as The Coëtivy Hours and create your own original print. Our theme for this workshop embraces human relations and feelings of friendship, welcoming, generosity and love. Limited to 15 participants, €15.00 per person, materials provided. Please book HERE

Conservation Symposium: Conserving the Past, Training for the Future- Friday 8 June, 10:30am – 4pm

A core part of the Library’s mission is to train and mentor newly-graduated conservators through an internship programme generously funded by the Library’s Patrons and the Heritage Council. We are delighted that a number of alumni will return to share their insights into the challenges they face in caring for the collections of leading institutions internationally. Two – Day Workshop: The Coëtivy Book of Hours meets the art of Crewel Embroidery- Saturday 28 July, 10.30am – 4.30pm & Sunday 29 July, 12noon – 4.30pm

Inspired by the wonderful flowers, birds and beasts of the Coëtivy Hours, join embroidery artist Phil Stewart, to create your own crewel work embroidery. The workshop includes drawing, design and practical stitch sampling on day one, followed by more focused work on your own piece on day two. Suitable for all levels, materials will be provided but feel free to bring your own tools. Limited to 10 participants, €85 per person. Please book HERE

Please note, we require 7 days' notice of a cancellation; otherwise the full workshop fee must be paid. Credit card details are thus required in order to guarantee your place in the workshop and we will be in touch shortly to request these.

Please be aware that we require a minimum 72 hours' notice of a cancellation if possible. These workshops take time and resources to prepare and we always have an extensive waiting list for each workshop. Therefore if you cannot attend and we do not hear from you we may be unable to reserve a place for your child in future workshops.
