Contemporary Art from Korea

19 November 2003 to 11 January 2004

In celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Ireland and Korea, ten contemporary Korean artists will exhibit their work at the Chester Beatty Library, European Museum of the year 2002.

With the rapid development of Korea in the last 50 years, large cities such as Seoul have come to play a prominent role in art and culture, both as places for artists and as subjects of art.  But despite - or perhaps because of - the speed of change in Korea, Koreans today still treasure the natural beauty of their homeland.  Much like their ancestors of a thousand years ago, Koreans look toward the land, sea and sky around them for inspiration and meaning.  Nature, more than anything else, is an important factor in the spiritual world of Koreans.

The relationship between man and nature has always been a point of fascination for Korean artists.  This exhibition features artists whose works explore this characteristic of Korean art.  Diverse in styles media, themes and methods, the artists are all recognised to have common interests based in Korean culture.
