Recent Acquisitions of the Chester Beatty Library
5 May to 21 December 1998
During the thirty years since the death of Sir Alfred Chester Beatty in 1968, the collection that he bequeathed to the Irish people has been gradually expanding as new material is acquired through both purchase and donation. The objects included in the exhibition are almost equally divided between those that were purchased by, and those that were donated to, the Library.
Because the Library has no Acquisitions Fund, even the purchase of each new item depends on receiving a donation of the needed funds from a generous benefactor. Among these are individuals, institutions, and, especially, the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands. The enhancement and development of the Collection therefore relies mainly upon the kindness of the Library’s donors.
This is an exhibition of objects that have entered the Library since 1994. Collectively they offer a glimpse into the acquisition process, illustrating how and why a collection such as this may grow over the years.
